DMK has made Chennai South a safe seat by winning 4 consecutive elections from 1996. Sitting MP – Baalu, T.R. has won on all these 4 occasions while maintaining his winning percentage.

The Constituency consists of 6 Assembly Constituencies – 3 of which are newly carved out from other constituencies. A major change for the Parliamentary Constituency is removing the Alandur Assembly Constituency and adding the newly created Constituency of Sholinganallur. This has changed the geography of the Constituency.

(iv) Led the Indian delegation to World Summit on Sustainable Development held in Johannesburg, South Afirca from 26th to 30th August, 2002, after intensive deliberations, the Summit adopted a Political Declaration and Johannesburg Plan of Implementation for furthering the international action for promoting sustainable development;
